Industrial Fastener Coatings & Surface Treatments

Surface Engineering

Critical Role of Coatings in Fastener Reliability

In critical mechanical connections across offshore wind turbines, subsea manifolds, chemical reactors, and desalination piping, bolt longevity depends not only on base metallurgy but equally on surface protection chemistry. A properly engineered fastener coating achieves three distinct engineering targets: lasting barrier or sacrificial corrosion prevention, controlled torque-to-tension conversion efficiency, and anti-galling lubrication under extreme clamping preloads.

TorqBolt Inc. applies specialized surface treatments that comply with stringent global standards including ASTM, ISO, DIN, and NORSPOK M-501. By evaluating field atmospheric conditions, galvanic contact risks, thermal cycles, and assembly tightening procedures, our metallurgists match coating chemistry with bolt substrate metallurgy to prevent premature fatigue failure, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and hydrogen-induced embrittlement.

Tribological Performance & Friction Coefficients (Nut Factor k)

Achieving specified bolt clamp load relies on uniform friction coefficients. Erratic thread friction dissipates applied torque into torsional friction, causing joint loosening or catastrophic bolt shearing under dynamic loading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Engineering Inquiries on Fastener Coatings

What is the primary difference between PTFE/Xylan® coatings and Hot-Dip Galvanizing on fasteners?
Hot-dip galvanizing provides a thick sacrificial zinc layer (typically 45 to 85 microns) ideal for outdoor structural environments, but can clog standard threads and exhibits a high, variable coefficient of friction (k ≈ 0.20). PTFE/Xylan fluoropolymer coatings provide a thin barrier (20 to 35 microns) with outstanding chemical and salt-spray resistance, low, uniform friction (k ≈ 0.08 to 0.12), and prevent thread galling during tensioning without thread tapping oversize.
How does TorqBolt mitigate Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) in high-strength coated fasteners?
For bolts and studs with hardness exceeding 32 HRC (approx. 300 HV / 1000 MPa tensile strength), TorqBolt mandates mechanical blasting or acid-free cleaning, followed by hydrogen embrittlement relief baking at 190°C to 220°C for 4 to 24 hours immediately following acid pickling or electroplating, strictly adhering to ASTM F1941 and ISO 9588 standards.
Can Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) coatings withstand high-pressure, high-temperature service?
Yes. Molybdenum Disulfide is a dry-film solid lubricant capable of supporting bearing pressures in excess of 250,000 psi (1,700 MPa) and operating temperatures up to 400°C in atmospheric conditions (higher in inert environments). It transfers lubricity sacrificially between mating threads to prevent galling under severe preload.
What quality assurance documentation is provided for coated bolting orders?
Every shipment is accompanied by an EN 10204 3.1 Inspection Certificate documenting base metal heat traceability, surface preparation verification, coating dry-film thickness (DFT per ASTM B499), cross-hatch adhesion testing (ASTM D3359), and certified neutral salt spray (NSS per ASTM B117) test hours.
